When a garage door slips off its track, it isn't safe to move in either direction. We get it back in line and figure out exactly what knocked it loose.
Few things look as alarming as a garage door hanging crooked or stuck halfway on its track, and it's one of the calls we get with the least warning. Whether the door is jammed at an angle, frozen partway, or completely off the rail, simply muscling it back into place rarely fixes the actual problem. The real question is what pushed it off track in the first place.
A handful of things usually cause a door to jump its track: a broken roller lets the panel slip out of the channel, the track has been bent, often after a vehicle bumps into it, or a snapped cable drops one side of the door unevenly. Each of these has a different fix, so we pinpoint the actual cause before touching the door itself.
Getting a door realigned isn't about forcing it back into place. We check the track for bends or dents that would send it off again, make sure the mounting brackets are still solidly fixed to the wall framing, and look over the rollers for wear or breakage. Wedging a door back into a track that's still damaged is a short-term fix that tends to fail again within days.
Once everything is back in place, we cycle the door through several full openings and closings to make sure it glides smoothly without binding or scraping the weatherstripping, which is often the earliest sign of a track that isn't quite square yet.
The usual suspects are a broken roller, a track bent from an impact, or a snapped cable that lets the door drop unevenly. Figuring out which one happened tells us how to fix it.
We'd steer you away from that. An off-track door is often still under spring tension, and forcing it back without checking the track and rollers first can send it off again or lead to an injury.
Not if we've addressed what caused it in the first place. We inspect the track for damage and swap out any worn rollers or cables so the same failure doesn't show up again a week later.
